Diedrich Diederichsen: Judgment, Objecthood, Temporality

August 7, 2009 / Deep in the idea of value—before it can become use or exchange—is a notion of delay that supports classical object-oriented art production. Contrasting visual art against music and
cinema, both of which have complicated relationships with various object-ontologies, Diedrich Diederichsen will focus on value’s relationship to reception and consumption.

This talk was originally presented on February 28, 2009, as part of Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism, a forum and month long speaker series organized with Artspeak.

Diedrich Diederichsen was editor of several music magazines in the 1980s (including Sounds, Hamburg, and Spex, Cologne) and has taught at academies in Germany, Austria, and the US in the fields of art history, musicology, theater studies, and cultural studies. He is currently Professor for Theory, Practice and Communication of Contemporary Art at the Academy of Fine Art, Vienna. His writing is seen regularly in art and culture publications, such as the magazines Texte zur Kunst, Fillip, Artforum, and Die Zeit, and in newspapers such as Tagesspiegel and Tageszeitung. Recent publications include Eigenblutdoping (Kiepenheuer and Witsch, 2008), Kritik des Auges (Philo Fine Arts, 2008), Argument Son (JRP Ringier, 2007), and Personas en loop (Stockcero, 2006).
