Kori Newkirk at Laxart
Culver City, California / For this exhibition, LA-based Kori Newkirk presents a single sculptural piece entitled RANK, which presides over the gallery’s main space. Best known for his seductive beaded curtain works depicting mundane suburban architectures flanking vivid scenes of violence and disaster, Newkirk here has created a stage complete with a glam-rock tinsel curtain.
Leading via ascending steps to a stately podium the whole structure is flawlessly clad in dazzling mirror sheets. Intended as a commentary on the public’s frenzied hopes and aspirations in view of the competing promises integral to this US presidential election carefully staged as media spectacle, Newkirk’s bling makeover of this modest set piece jubilantly endorses show-business, packaging, and general narcissism for the political arena.
Kori Newkirk’s RANK runs at Laxart, Culver City from 19 July to 6 September 2008.
