Motto Storefront: Andjeas Ejiksson

June 19, 2010, 2pm / Motto Storefront transforms Artspeak into a temporary space for the sale, presentation, and discussion of contemporary art publishing. The selection of printed matter for the store has been made by Motto, a Berlin and Zürich-based bookstore and distributor specializing in experimental, small run, and self-published artist books, magazines, and fanzines.

Motto Storefront is organized by Artspeak and Fillip, with Motto, Berlin and takes place at Artspeak, 233 Carrall Street. The store is open Tuesday to Sunday 12 – 5pm.

Motto Storefront provides the context for a series of related public programming intended to create a sustained dialogue within Vancouver on issues related to the production and consumption of art publishing. Formed around an ongoing, ad hoc residency program with international publishers, designers, artists, and booksellers, this series will take the form of weekly talks, workshops, and launches investigating alternative retail models, self-initiated design practices, and small scale publishing initiatives.

On Saturday, June 19 at 2pm, Andjeas Ejiksson will give an “Obituary of Geist,” outlining the birth, life, and recent death of the Giest magazine and as well as it’s potential afterlife. Ejiksson will discuss publishing and distribution as artistic practice and his collaborative efforts of writing, criticism and discourse since starting magazine in 2002.

About the Speaker

Andjeas Ejiksson is the founder and editor of Sweden based art journal Geist (2002–10). Geist uses the journal medium as a form for artistic expression and moves between art and essay writing through stagings and variations on themes and figures. Every issue is published as a free-standing project which means that both the journal’s form and the disposition of its content shift with each staging. The first issue of Geist was published in 2002 by Andjeas Ejiksson and Lisa Jonasson. Ejiksson is also editor of Method Quarterly, a self-commenting mechanism for the Geist editorial board.
