The Apartment Inhabits the Fillip Studio

December 5 – 13, 2008 / Fillip is pleased to host the exhibition Local, curated by The Apartment, Vancouver. The exhibition will inhabit Fillip’s office for a week and directly responds to the studio’s location at the corner of Cambie and Cordova Steets at the edge of Gastown and the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver.

The exhibition features work by 22 Vancouver artists including Abbas Akhavan, Kim Kennedy Austin, Raymond Boisjoly, Colleen Brown, Sabine Bitter, Barb Choit, Andrew Dadson, Jason Fitzpatrick, Jacob Gleeson, Andrew Herft, Jeremy Hof, Cameron Kerr, Jeff Khonsary, Jacquie Leggatt, Sara Mameni, Brad Phillips, Sylvain Sailly, Igor Santizo, Jeremy Shaw, Kika Thorne, Ron Tran, and Jen Weih.

According to curator Lee Plested, the works in the show “express an engagement with the present tense… The artists in Local centralize the individual subjects of their work in the present by choosing common materials directly at hand, organizing relational projects that place the viewer in the work, and producing process-based projects that express their time and activity in form.”

The exhibition opens Friday, December 5th from 7-10pm and is held in conjunction with the Vancouver launch of Five Broadsides, an edition produced by Fillip in collaboration with The Apartment featuring newsprint posters by Fia Backström, Andrew Dadson, Matthew Higgs, Colter Jacobsen, and Frances Stark.

Local is on view Tuesday to Saturday, December 6th to 13th, 12–5pm at the office of Fillip at 305 Cambie Street, Vancouver. Please join us for a curator’s tour of the show, Saturday the 13th at 3pm.
