Fillip is pleased to present a conversation between artists Andrea Fraser & Pope.L at Vielmetter Los Angeles, Saturday June 4th at noon.

Co-presented with New Documents (Los Angeles) and Mitchell-Innes & Nash (New York), this conversation is organized on the occasion of the launch of two publications: Services Working Group (Fillip, 2021) and Pope.L: My Kingdom for a Title (New Documents and Mitchell-Innes & Nash, 2021).

This event will provide both artists an opportunity to discuss the overlaps and divergences in their practices within the context of recent exhibitions at Vielmetter Los Angeles and the Hammer Museum. The discussion will be moderated by curator Eric Golo Stone and Mitchell-Innes & Nash Partner, Courtney Willis Blair.

About the Participants

Andrea Fraser is an artist and Professor of Interdisciplinary Studio in the Department of Art at the University of California, Los Angeles. Major works include projects for the Venice Biennale; Tate Modern, London; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Her essays and performance texts have appeared in Artforum, October, and Texte zur Kunst, amongst others. Her most recent books are 2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics (MIT Press, 2018); and Andrea Fraser: Collected Interviews, 1990–2018 (A.R.T. Press and Koenig Books, 2019).

Pope.L is a visual artist and educator whose multidisciplinary practice uses binaries, contraries, and preconceived notions embedded within contemporary culture to create artworks in various formats including writing, painting, performance, installation, video, and sculpture. Building upon his long history of enacting arduous, provocative, absurdist performances and interventions in public spaces, Pope.L applies some of the same social, formal, and performative strategies to his interests in language, system, gender, race, and community. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions at institutions, galleries, and biennials worldwide.

About the Moderators

Eric Golo Stone is a writer, artist, and curator, and is currently the Artistic Director of the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart. His varied practices consistently examine the political economy of art. His work analyzes and enacts the socioeconomic structures and governance arrangements by which art institutions operate. His writing has been published in Afterall, October, Texte zur Kunst, and Flash Art, among other publications.

Courtney Willis Blair is Partner at Mitchell-Innes & Nash. She has managed artist projects that have exhibited worldwide, including at Desert X; documenta; the Jewish Museum, New York; the Kochi-Muziris Biennial; Kunstmuseum Basel; MoMA, New York; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago; Whitechapel, London; and the Whitney Biennial. Her writing has appeared in Forbes, New York magazine, Cultured, and Modern Painters, and she is editor most recently of Pope.L: My Kingdom for a Title (New Documents and Mitchell-Innes & Nash, 2021).
